Dear oppo,

While digging deep on the interwebs today, something caught my eye.

I had never laid eyes across this vehicle in all of my few years in this earth and i must say my life was surely lacking.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Just look at it, its glorious.

What my brief search told me is that this is one w118 prototype done in 1960, however i couldn’t uncover any other information.

Can someone tell us something more, why was this design shelved? I love it...

It looks like a MB version of the 2002.

All the sixties cars had similar design cues me thinks, and this, this mercedes looks so so sofisticated, i see no unnecessary line

It wasn’t shelved. It became an Audi.

(DKW F102 pictured to emphasize the similarities between the Audi and the W118)

Haaaa, and it gained two more doors in the process, uhmn, not as sexy i would say, i wonder if anyone ever tought of getting hold of one of these and work it back into the w118 prototype, would make for an interesting family heirloom project, amirite?

My dad had one of those, I have a black and white picture of it somewhere.

Wow, that’s a bit unusual. The wheelbase seems too long for the car, but perhaps they prioritized rear legroom over trunk space.

Or it is sans two doors lol

Perhaps. If I recall correctly the Audi F103 was a direct development of the W118 (the F102 was slightly different, because two stroke), down to the engine and FWD architecture. Will require lots of bodywork though.

That is beautiful, but I wish the rear wheels were moved a few inches forward. Something looks slightly off to me, maybe the fact that the rear axle sits *behind* the base of the C-pillar.

Very Datsun 510 sedan in the rear of that Audi.

Probably the Japanese being copycats again, seeing as the DKW came 5 years before the Nissan...
